Primary applications of PRISM®
The PRISM® Model of Human behaviour has numerous applications, here are some of the most popular:
The PRISM® model of human behaviour enables individuals to see graphically the dimensions of their own preferred behaviour, this provides the trained practitioner with the tools to develop a candidate’s understanding of the impact that his or her style may have on others with different behaviour preferences. Once this is appreciated, the candidate can then be shown how to recognise other people’s preferences, by observation, listening and questioning, and by using the simple PRISM® colour system. They will be then able to use this information to adapt their own style. For example, providing those who are naturally analytical with the data they need to assess a proposition, or those who are results orientated, by focusing on the elements of a proposal that will demonstrate potential success. These techniques can also be used in all customer interactions, moving away from the concept of treating a customer as you, yourself, would wish to be treated towards treating customers as they wish to be treated.
Using these techniques have been shown to improve profitability by selling to individuals in the most appropriate way, creating harmony and removing some of the desire to win at all cost. Similarly, the techniques have been shown to reduce the decision making time to close a deal, by instilling trust and confidence in the relationship created between customer and salesperson. Coupled with techniques on defusing aggressive customer behaviour in complaint handling situations, the system can help customer-facing staff to handle any conflict situation and turning complaining customers into becoming advocates for your products and services
By profiling the vacancy to be filled in advance of the recruitment process the PRISM® system can help the trained practitioner choose the words for an advert that will attract the most suitable applicants to apply for the position.
The job profile will act as a robust datum of preferred behaviours against
which applicants can be compared. A comparison between the job profile
and the candidates own profile will provide the trained practitioner with
a structure for questioning the applicant to ensure the intensity of the
key behaviours is identified. Similarly those behaviours which are counterproductive,
or which may cause conflict within an existing team, can be identified.
Behaviours which can be adapted and performed on occasion can be assessed in terms of the degree of stress or stretch this may cause in relation to the demands of the role, thus ensuring due diligence is maintained in monitoring employees health.
The candidate profile can be administered by email at the most appropriate stage of the recruitment process and the candidate’s response which will be sent back directly to the practitioner can be viewed and compared against the job profile when time allows.
The system’s printed report can be given to the candidate following the interview as an overview of the candidates profile and would act as feedback for some of the more generic aspects of the profile.
The PRISM® behavioural mapping tool will indicate to the trained practitioner the degree that the most academically suitable or, most experienced, “best fit” candidate will also fit the role behaviourally.
The PRISM® model of human behaviour is an ideal tool for any professional personal performance coach. The system is easy to use and to administer. The results can be sent electronically around the world and act as a common data point which coach and candidate can access to discuss performance preferences and development tactics. The trained PRISM® coach will be able to identify from a candidate’s profile areas where his or her strengths are under-utilised and, therefore, where their true potential is unrealised. They can also identify within the profile, elements of a candidate’s perception of their current role, which may be causing them stress, and which could, if prolonged, affect their health or well-being.
By comparing a candidate’s profile with a variety of job profiles the coach will be able to discuss career advice and guidance. The coach can also provide advice on communication styles, conflict resolution and performance against differing competence models as well as Leadership style and development, all from a single input from the candidate.
Managers and Leaders using PRISM® can align staff expectations from the roles they for fill with those of their own. A meeting of minds can result from analysing each person’s perception of what the job demands are, and, how they can be delivered. This can then become the basis for a performance appraisal also using the PRISM® system. The system can be linked to a customer’s own competence model and candidates observable behavioural preferences shown against them. The system becomes a neutral catalyst for opening meaningful discussions between managers and their staff. The empowered manager will also be able to see where under-utilised potential exists amongst his/her staff and how, by altering roles to suit the individual, greater performance and staff satisfaction could be achieved.
The PRISM® model also provides a robust process for 360° feedback.
Gathering information from an individual’s line manager, direct reports
and peer group (which could include customers) the system can analyse,
plot and report on input data against the candidate’s own perception
of their performance. This enables the trained practitioner to provide
meaningful analysis and feedback, leading to an agreed performance
development strategy.
PRISM® is also an ideal tool for managers to use to help resolve conflict situations between individuals. The system will allow the profiles of those involved to be displayed on the same graph. This will allow the trained practitioner to explain the differences in behavioural styles and the impact these have on each other. It can then be seen that by each person either adopting different behaviours, or by being more understanding towards the other’s style, conflict issues can be prevented and more harmonious relationships restored.
The PRISM® team diagnostic system allows managers to see how the team is likely to perform as a group and how they may need supporting. The model allows for the performance requirements of a task or project to be entered as a benchmark against which the team’s potential performance can be analysed. The model can demonstrate the impact on a team’s potential performance of moving people in and out of the team. It will show which members of the team have particular strengths in specific areas, those who should be involved at different stages of a project and where performance conflicts may arise within the team.
The impact of the team leader’s style on the team can be shown graphically and overlaid against the team’s own profile and interpreted by the trained practitioner.
The team diagnostic is an essential tool for inspirational leaders who
require project teams to be formed and to perform against
exacting standards and tight deadlines.
The accreditation will enable the candidate to use PRISM® within
any licensed organisation or if you have your own business for it to become
licensed. The licensed organisation will undertake only to use PRISM® in
a professional and appropriate manner, working within all current legislation
and to have the best interests of all candidates in mind at all times.
The PRISM® accredited training organisation for the UK and Europe is Team Dynamics International Ltd. Tunbridge Wells Kent. They can be contacted on www.teamdynamics.co.uk Courses are available throughout the UK and Europe and can be run as an exclusive event for companies who require six or more practitioners.
The course content covers how the model uses the latest neuroscientific research and how it links graphically to brain activity. It shows how behavioural preferences may be being suppressed by other less dominant behaviours and how some demands of the workplace can produce stress where others might provide challenge and opportunity for personal growth.
All applications of the PRISM® model are demonstrated and practised during the training, enabling the practitioner to appreciate the wide range of uses of PRISM®, which has been described as the “Swiss Army Knife” for the inspirational manager. One tool – many applications.
Once trained and accredited the practitioner will be issued with his or her own password and user number enabling them to access all of the system and support materials. This can be taken with them should they leave one company and join another, and providing the new company is a licensed PRISM® user, they will be able to continue as a practitioner.
